Our Cats
The Necessity of Testing
At Sykris Burmese, we take great pride in using the diagnostic genetic testing facilities at Lanfords, Bristol. Burmese are susceptible in a few breed lines to "Burmese Hypokalaemia or Familial Episodic Hypokalaemic Polymyopathy which is characterised by episodes of low serum potassium levels and high CPK (an enzyme that indicates muscle damage).Clinical signs include skeletal muscle weakness, which is episodic in nature and can affect the whole animal or may be localised to certain muscles. This is most obvious in the neck muscles, but sometimes occurs in just the limbs. As a result affected cats tend to have problems walking and holding their head correctly."
We are Burmese head Defect aware as well as the Flat Chested Kitten Syndrome (FCKS) and only use lines that do not exhibit either of these defects and have been tested by various past breeders who have worked hard to eradicate it.
At Sykris, we take every option available to us to help eradicate disease and viruses and also have our breeding cats tested for the
FeLV / FIV Virus as well as taking precautions to reduce pathogens potentially brought back from shows.
We always maintain a Hypokalaemia & FeLV / FIV negative home!
